Police revealed that the three assailants were from Vinovo, La Loggia and Moncalieri respectively, and were driving a Fiat Doblò owned by one of their fathers.
They drove alongside the athlete in a street near the northern city of Turin and launched an egg at her face.
The suspects were identified with the assistance of CCTV footage.
One of the young men – a 19-year-old – said that the attack on the athlete was not isolated, and that the three friends had already carried out seven other attacks of a similar nature in the last two months.
Authorities have confirmed that the attack was a childish “game” and not racially motivated.
Osakue – whose parents came from Nigeria – will today decide whether she will be able to take part in next month’s European Athletics Championships in Berlin, where she is due to represent Italy in the discus.
